It's only been 2 days but I'm already in LOVE with Seoul. Every turn is a pleasant surprise of It was my first time visiting Hongdae today and I can tell that I will be coming back A LOT. There's something about the hip, vibrant and youthful Hongdae vibe that makes me feel so alive. Hanyang summer school, thanks for opening my eyes to my new favourite city in the world.
Ever
since high school ended, I have spent considerable amount of time thinking over
what I really like, what I want to do in life and if passion and work can come
hand in hand.
Deciding
on what I wanted to do in life was hands down the hardest decision I have had
to make in my life. So many factors to take into account - the career
opportunities, what I like, what are my talents, costs, places, etc.
I like
languages, but what can I do with it? I like fashion, but then again what can I
do with it? I like traveling - so does everyone else and wait a minute. Is it
even necessary to turn your passion into your career? Would it be healthy even,
because I feel that our passion and hobbies are what we turn to when we're sick
of our daily routine, and when we're sick of our hobbies, what then do we turn
to?
I like doing business. I enjoyed running my business but I know for sure that I don't like accounting. For a start, I find it way harder to motivate myself to study for my business modules for my lack of interest, while it's so easy for me to devour hundreds of pages of my history textbook or do stacks of German grammar exercises - simply because I love them. It doesn't help that the
accounting class in NUS is extremely competitive because well, I'm not willing work 24/7 for them straight As. I don't think it's worth it. I go to school to learn, not to chase perfection in a piece of scroll that would just be worth a glance by your future recruiters.
Accounting could be fun, I don't know. I won't really know until I get the industry exposure - I'll let you know what I feel after my winter internship.
Do you
guys feel the same way about your career? How did you guys end up where you
are? Are you happy about it? Does happiness come into the equation when
deciding what to study or what to do in life? Is being happy with what you do too
much to ask for? Are we the ungrateful, selfish generation who expects
everything to go our way? Am I now asking too many questions?
Mud Festival
Quick,
what did you first picture when you read the title?
A huge
area full of people flinging sticky, gloopy, viscous muck at each other? Or
maybe you're a more conservative and rational thinking person, who pictured
some slides and a pool of mud with the consistency of your poop after a
particularly dodgy Ramly burger?
At least
that's what we had in mind. I think it's fair to say we were slightly
disappointed when we rocked up to this after a 3 hour bus ride.

Less mud,
more diluted cemenht. Where were the pools of mud that people were desperately
trying to throw each other in? How come I couldn't grab some and fling it at
unsuspecting people?
Bit of a
let down, but to be fair, what we got instead wasn't all that bad. There were
still inflatable slides, obstacle courses, wrestling pits, etc and everyone
around seemed to be having fun. The whole atmosphere was infectious and we were
desperate to be a part of it, so we entered the mud zone and slapped on some of
it on our bodies in an attempt to blend in and look like we were having fun.
Wrestling
Pit
First up
was the wrestling pit. Ahead of us in the queue were three massive guys. We
intentionally left a large, awkward gap in between us and them because fuck
that, I didn't want to go home in a wheelchair.
When our
round started I slipped and fell on my back almost immediately, much to the
delight of the Korean dude who was commentating on the proceedings. Adilet made
sure I wasn't on my feet for long right after when he grabbed my ankle out from
underneath, ensuring I enjoyed an intimate moment with the floor.
Thankfully
I managed to salvage some of my rapidly diminishing dignity by flipping him
twice and taking Aminah down, but I left that pit less of a man than when I had
entered.
Slide
This was
basically a two storey inflatable slide with mud at the bottom. I held hands
with Aminah and jumped. She didn't. We ended up spinning our way down. It was
awesome.
Beach
Party
Probably
worth staying the night for this, unfortunately we only got to experience the
one during the day, which was pretty fun anyways. They play the usual party
music but there's foam and water being sprayed at you with beach balls and
floats flying everywhere. Can't really go wrong with that combination. But you
certainly can improve it with alcohol so that's what we did.
Beach
Cold. So
cold. Float rental made sure it was fun though. With the number of people there
though I'm pretty sure the pH level of the water was all pee and no H.
Showers
Remember
Korea and it's love for dongs? Yeah.
30 naked
men, some with their kids, cramped into a showering room with no cubicles
separating each shrivelled up flaccid penis from the next, washing themselves
and each other while unabashedly holding casual conversations.
"So
where are we headed for dinner later?"
"I
don't know, lets grab some hot dogs."

Exam day
was a breeze. Macroecons was a joke just like john peterson and money and
banking wasn't hard either. Good thing we didn't waste our time studying and
instead had a karaoke session in our room the night before.
At night
we went out to Itaewon, first stopping at Dongdaemun to buy sandals. Went to a
bar called Thursday party which was pretty cool. We met the kazakh girls and a
group of belgium students.
BBY GOT HIGH ON 2 LONG ISLANDS
Went to a
club/bar after that and it was fun because they weren't playing shitty edm but
proper songs instead. Liliya went back with one of the belgium guys called
martin who apparently had a girlfriend. Thought he was a good guy at first
until I found out. Laura got dapao'd by the good looking belgium dude in strat
mgmt class. Aminah had to settle for me lul. Went back at 5. shag bodoh.
Probably
the event that we were most excited for. Boryeong Mud Festival!!! Woke up at
630, missed the bus as usual and had to cab to school. Aminah slept all the way
there so she didn't get to try the takoyaki burger thingy that was delicious.
First
thing we did when we reached was the mud wrestling. Most fun thing ever, had so
much fun flipping each other over and tripping over each other. We also tried
out the slide which was a lot more fun than it looked. Aminah didn’t jump
together and just sat down instead which meant I started spinning as soon as I
jumped. Maybe that was a good thing.
Lunch was
a surprisingly decent legit burger. Beach mini party that followed was fucking
awesome. They kept blasting us with water and foam and it was chaos. We left
after a group of retarded indians started screaming and dancing next to us. We
realised we needed alcohol so we tried out like 7 different cocktails. Aminah
nottie gurl got high after one. Went for a swim after in the cold af sea and
then joined the beach party for a while again.
Dinner
was shit, just instant ramen.
Wish we
had the massage chair in our room.
Good
night jegi dong.
We woke
up extra early, rushed and made our way down to the meeting point just on time
only to find that nobody was there. Ate some shitty omelette sandwich thingy
that just tasted good because we were hungry. Aminah being the qt that she is
bought some banana milk.
The
meeting time was 7am but the bus finally left at 745 or so. We slept all the
way. It was good and much needed but my neck and shoulders died a slow death.
Rafting
was kinda boring and not at all what I was expecting. I was hoping for at least
some rapids but what we got was pretty lame. The guide kept saying dangerous
but the only danger present was that of us falling asleep. Swimming in the
river and jumping off the makeshift slide was lots of fun though. Still I
didn’t feel like it was a waste because it was different from the usual
shopping and walking around Korea that we've been doing and I kinda liked it.
Bus back
was the same as the bus there, we slept almost all the way.
Dinner
was burgers. My shrimp burger had 5 shrimps in it like wtf. It was pretty good
though.
We also
bought a box of mochi. We've eaten like 3 I think. Maybe when Aminah falls
asleep I'll finish the box >:-
